Childhood Cancer Community Gathers in Washington, DC
From CureSearch.org
The 9th Annual CureSearch Reach the Day 2009 (June 22nd and 23rd) is a gathering of the childhood cancer community in Washington, DC that provides an opportunity for those who care about children with cancer, to advocate for more funding for the research needed to find cures for childhood cancer.
Since the first gathering in 2003, advocacy has resulted in $12 million in Congressional appropriations to support the research of the Children’s Oncology Group, a worldwide clinical trial cooperative group. This year’s group will work to ensure that the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act passed in 2008 is funded at the $30 million level promised.
Funding for childhood cancer is much lower than many adult cancers. Of the National Cancer Institute's $4.6 billion federal budget, breast cancer received 12%, prostate cancer received 7%, and all 12 major groups of pediatric cancers combined received less than 3%.
